You know you want one of these suckers.
This pattern will show you how to crochet the beholders shown above. The finished beholders are approximately 4 to 4.5 inches tall, not counting the eye stalks. Please note that this pattern is for non-commercial purposes only; neither it nor the finished beholders are ever to be sold. The image and concept of the beholder belongs to Wizards of the Coast, and I am making no profit whatsoever from this pattern.

You will need:
Worsted weight yarn: Approximately 3 oz of main color
Small amounts contrast colors for eyes, white, and black
Polyester fiberfill or other stuffing
Gauge is unimportant. Alter the yarn and hook sizes as you see fit to increase or decrease the size of your beholder.
Body — to be worked in the round.
Rnd 1: Ch 2. 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6)
Rnd 2: 2sc in each st around. (12)
Rnd 3: (2sc in next st, sc in next st) around. (18)
Rnd 4: (2sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts) around. (24)
Rnd 5: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 6: (2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts) around. (30)
Rnd 7: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 8: (2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts) around. (36)
Rnds 9 - 13: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 14: Sc in next 4 sts, ch 12, sk next 12 sc, sc in remaining 20 sts. This forms the opening of the mouth (Fig. 1).
Rnds 15 - 19: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 20: (Dec next 2 sts, sc in next 4 sts) around. (30)
Rnd 21: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 22: (Dec next 2 sts, sc in next 3 sts) around. (24)
Rnd 23: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 24: (Dec next 2 sts, sc in next 2 sts) around. (18)
Rnd 25: (Dec next 2 sts, sc in next st) around. (12)
Rnd 26: (Dec next 2 sts) around. Fasten off and sew shut.
Begin stuffing body through mouth opening, being careful to leave space for the mouth interior. In the end, this thing will need to look more like Pacman than a round ball, so keep this in mind.
Row 1: With black, ch 11. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each st across. (10) Turn.
Row 2: Sl st in next 2 sts, sc in next st, sc and hdc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, sc and hdc in next st, sc in next st, sl st in last 2 sts. (12) Fasten off.
With black, join in the base chain of the mouth interior. Working on the opposite side of the chain (fig. 3), work rows 1 and 2 again.
Sew mouth interior to mouth hole, with the base chain as the middle — each end of the base chain goes in one corner of the mouth. To sculpt the sides of the mouth, pinch the beholder’s body at the corners of the mouth and run a threaded needle through to tack it down.
Main eye — to be worked in the round
Rnd 1: Ch 2. 6sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6)
Rnd 2: 2sc in each st around. (12)
Rnd 3: (2sc in next st, sc in next st) around. (18) Sl st in next st and fasten off. Sew to front of head above mouth.
Embroider the iris...
...and the pupil.
Row 1: In main color, ch 10. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 2 sts. Hdc in next 3 sts. Sc in last 3 sts.
Sew to head, curving around the main eye and overlapping it just a little.
Row 1: Ch 13; this is the base chain. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in next 2 sts. (Ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in next 2 sts of base chain) across. This should make 5 teeth. Sew to top of mouth.
To separate the teeth and make them look more like fangs, with black yarn, wrap yarn around the stitches between the teeth (fig. 7). The extra 2 sl sts on each end of the row may also count as teeth.
Eye stalk — work in the round, and make as many of these for your beholder as you like. Six is a pretty good number.
Rnd 1: With eye color, ch 2. 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (6) Sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
Rnd 2: Jn with main color. 2sc in each st around. (12)
Rnd 3: (Dec next 2 sts) around. (6)
Rnds 4 - 10: Sc in next 3 sts, sl st in next 3 sts.
Rnds 11 - 14: Sc in each st around. Sl st in next st. Fasten off.
If desired, make some stalks taller or shorter by adding or subtracting sc rows at the end. Sew in various positions on top of head.
All done! Now you just need a Lego DnD party to feed to it.
